Assume the Position
Well, what else can I say? Once again, it's that old familiar situation: looking up at the Yankees in the standings. Sox blow it against Tampa. NY holds on against the Birds. Yankees take the lead in the AL East by a half game. Oh, and Cleveland leads in the Wild Card by 1. So if the playoffs started today, the Red Sox would be on the outside looking in. I guess the good news is that the playoffs don't start today. 11 games to go to turn this around. Doesn't look good, though. Megan and I are going to the Sox-O's game on Saturday in Baltimore...last year we went to the very last game of the year, Sox-O's at Baltimore, and while it was fun, there was nothing to play for, since the Sox had already locked up a playoff spot and the O's had been out of it since May. It had the look and feel of a spring training game. At the very least, this coming Saturday promises to be a meaningful game. And then there's NEXT weekend...if the whole season hinges on that final weekend series, I don't know if I can watch.
Nationals droppedtheir fourth straight, a 5-1 loss to the Giants. Meanwhile, rookie Ryan Church apologized for remarks he made in a WaPo article the other day suggesting that Jews are headed for eternal damnation. Here's Tony Kornheiser's quick take on the situation. The Nats have 10 games remaining, and now that they're essentially finished in the WC race, I'm expecting a lot more controversy in the next week or so out of the Nats. Look for at least one more big blowout between Jose Guillen and his teammates, and look for some brave soul on the pitching staff to call out Frank Robinson for and running the entire staff into the ground.
Back in the real world...my thoughts are with those in the path of Hurricane Rita. Scary.
I heard Digital Dan on WEEI tonight.
I take the blame for last night's loss. With a comfortable lead for Wakefield, I thought, I switched over to watch the season opener of.......................
...LOST. Sorry. I should have been watching the best show on television, but it was cancelled at the end of last season............AMERICAN DREAMS. Do you think the Sox would be in second place if I had been able to watch that?
